Do Free Static QR Codes Expire?

A static QR code does not have an expiry date. Its squares directly encode the URL, text, WiFi details, email action or phone number. If the pattern remains readable, a scanner can continue decoding that information.
Why can a static code appear to expire?
- The linked webpage was moved, removed or allowed its domain to expire.
- A WiFi password or network name changed.
- An email address or phone number is no longer active.
- The print was damaged, cropped, stretched or covered.
- Low contrast, glare or insufficient size prevents reliable scanning.
Static versus dynamic QR codes
A dynamic service usually encodes a short redirect controlled by that provider. The destination can be changed and scans may be measured, but the code depends on the provider and plan remaining active. A static code cannot change its destination after download, but it does not need that redirect service.
Choose stable destinations
For long-lived print, use a domain and URL you control, avoid campaign paths likely to change and maintain redirects when reorganising the website. Keep the source artwork so you can reprint cleanly.
