How to Create a WiFi QR Code Without Sharing Your Password — illustration

A WiFi QR code can let a guest join a network without manually typing the password. It reduces casual password sharing, but it does not make the password secret: the network credentials are encoded in the QR pattern and can be recovered by someone who scans it.

Create the code

  1. Open the free QR code generator and choose WiFi.
  2. Enter the network name exactly as it appears.
  3. Choose the correct encryption option, normally WPA/WPA2.
  4. Enter the password, generate the code and test it on more than one phone.

Use a guest network when possible

For an office, rental or public-facing venue, create a separate guest network with appropriate device isolation and access controls. If the code is photographed or copied, changing the guest password is less disruptive than changing credentials for internal devices.

Place it deliberately

Display the QR code where intended guests can reach it, not in a window or public social post. A printed QR code is equivalent to sharing access with anyone who can scan or copy it.

When the password changes

The existing static code continues to contain the old credentials, so create and print a new code. The generator processes the entered WiFi details locally in the browser and does not send them in analytics events.

Also read the printing and contrast guide and static QR expiry explanation.
